Releasing the magic in the attic

Molly loved her 2-family home in Jamaica Plain. She loved the neighborhood, the fact that friends chose to gather there, and the fact it was all her own to do with as she pleased. And what pleased her was practicing music up in the attic. This soulful space of childhood fantasies and grandmother’s keepsakes inspired her more than the dated, standard apartment below.

Her renovation plans would have to bring down some of the magic from the attic to her everyday living space. First the ceiling came down, then the walls, which gave her an expansive light-filled space. Twin sliding doors divided a guest room/workshop area, and the front section of the actual attic was transformed into a music loft. The main living, eating and cooking area was converted into a double-height space, with half of the old ceiling joists re-engineered as rafter ties, giving a syncopated rhythm to the room. Music now filters up, down and throughout the apartment.
