Trellis House , Chapel Hill, NC

In romance languages, the word for ‘mild’ is the same as the word for “sweet.” The Trellis House is designed for outdoor living in the mild/sweet climate of North Carolina.

A retirement home for an active couple, the house is designed to extend living space outside. Two wings form the house, bordering the couples’ carefully tended garden. Between them, a specially detailed wood and copper trellis extends from the front entry to the rear garden carrying fragrant jasmine vines that shade the large glass doors that open the living room to the outside .

Careful attention to the orientation of the house, wide overhangs and the trellis provide shade for ample windows, which are arranged to eliminate the need for curtains. Cross-ventilation and shading gently reduce the need for air-conditioning, enabling the house to spend most of its time open to the garden.
